Modelling competitions are a totally different ballgame to entering pageants: Firstly, you are judged not only on your appearance, but also on your personality and strength of character. Competing in pageants requires not only a pretty face, but also confidence, intelligence, an ability to promote yourself, and most importantly, a great personality!; Modelling competitions have much stricter entry criteria, for example girls no older than 24 and you have to be over 5ft 8 are standard guidelines; Modelling competitions also usually promote a publication, company, product, event, or service, so they do not usually charge a fee to enter, as he organisers usually have the financial resources to promote the event themselves; In contrast to pageants, the winning prize will not have much cash value, and often include gifts of products from the supporting company, vouchers or complimentary tanning, hair products, makeup, gym memberships and clothing. However, most modelling competitions also offer the winner a contract with a modelling agency, or photo shoot in a magazine to start their career. Beauty Pageants are incredibly different to modelling competitions as firstly, the age range is much wider: Teenage girls can enter Teen contests, over 18’s can enter Miss contests, and older ladies can enter Mrs and sometimes Ms contests. Many girls take up pageants as a hobby, then get the ‘pageant bug’ and end up forging successful modelling careers, which can be the icing on the cake! Secondly. pageants are more of a fun, social event, where you can meet new people, make friends and gain confidence, but is still very competitive. The prizes are different to those in modelling contests, as the winner usually gets a crown and sash, cash prize, beauty products, clothing, website, holidays plus a crown, and sometimes the chance to attend an international contest; a cash award, some kind of holiday, tooth whitening or similar cosmetic prize, and most importantly, fame as the face of the title and a place in the winners’ archives of the contest. Winning a beauty pageant will be harder work than winning a modelling contest too, but the over – all potential – the fact that you get to be a national title – holder for a year, make it worth it! The majority of pageants charge a fee to actually enter, which varies from £95 to £500 but this cost can be easily covered when contestants find sponsors to cover their expenses.

Competing in pageants is very different from modelling, but there is a relatively large cross – over in the number of girls entering both industries. Some girls use pageants as n means of entering the industry and gaining experience and exposure, while others enter the modelling industry in order to be noticed by pageant organisers, and eventually, to win one. However, many girls also enter the modelling industry because a friend or relative has said that they could be a model, and suggest they give it a go. While modelling can be an incredibly rewarding career, it can also be confusing if you do not know where to start. So, UKB has created this information for you so you can decide which area of modelling you want to pursue, and most importantly, which area of modelling you are most suited to.
