Not Know your ‘Go – See’ from your ‘Open Casting?’ Look no further, UKB has the answers! The world of modelling can be a confusing place, so to make it easy for you, here are a number of key terms you will hear flying around in the industry:
Assignment: Job that is either booked for you by your agent, or a job you arrange yourself – any time when you work as a model. Booker: Person at your model agency who books you for work. You will usually have one booker who looks after you at the agency, however the agency may have lots of bookers for the different departments and types of models that the agency represents (for example: Main Board, Classic, Children, Characters, or Plus Size.). Booking: An assignment/job Contact sheet/Z Card: A selection of small pictures from your portfolio, taken during a photo shoot and printed onto paper for viewing by clients. Commission: Usually around 20%, this is the mount payable to the agency from your earnings. Commission is deducted before payment is made to the model. You will also have to pay your own tax. Fees: The amount you get paid for a job. These vary from job to job and are dependant on what the assignment is. Your agent negotiates fees on your behalf, but you are responsible forpaying your own tax, as a self – employed person. Go See: Doing the rounds to photographers, clients, advertising agencies as requested by your agency, to get you well known and introduce you to the industry. Open Casting: An audition/interview for work. Attending an open casting, means that anyone can attend and there will probably be lots of people there. You need to stand out at open castings, to progress to the next stage, or to be booked for the job. Portfolio: A book of photographs that a model carries around with him/her when going to see clients for work. Our portfolio will be a selection of your best photographs and will be used to get you booked for jobs.
Request Casting/Call Back: An audition/interview for work, where you are either selected from a previous open casting, or from photographs submitted by your booker. A Request Casting will only call back a small selection of models they are potentially interested in booking for the job. Getting a Request Casting is a good thing!
TFP (Test For Print): When a photographer and model agree to do a job together where neighter gets paid. Both sign a model release so the photographer and model can use the images from the photo shoot for their relative portfolios. Up and coming models are often requested for TFP shoots, as they need the experience and images for their portfolio.
Tear sheets: Pages torn out a magazine/catalogue that are usually displayed in your portfolio. Test shoot: New models should expect to do several of these professional photographic sessions in order to obtain the necessary shots to promote themselves and get experience within the industry.
Index card also known as model card/comp card/Z card: A models calling card and business card all in one; a mini-brochure displaying photographs of the model and vital statistics. Always introduce yourself with your Z Card and portfolio.
